GLCL Spring Marathon Preparation Virtual Races

During discussions when we were setting up the winter virtual GLCL races, it was mentioned that many runners would also usually be taking part in longer distance races this time of year to prepare for a Spring marathon. 

So we came up with the idea of, in addition to the winter virtual GLCL league 5 mile races, to also having GLCL Spring Marathon Preparation Virtual Races : January 8 mile,  February Half Marathon and March 20 mile virtual races. 

These three longer distance virtual races are not part of the virtual GLCL winter league 5 x 5 mile race series, but are totally separate virtual races and will not influence scoring in the virtual GLCL winter league 5 x 5 mile race competition.

The Jan 8 mile, Feb Half Marathon and Mar 20 mile virtual races will be free to enter, and entry will be restricted to just the affiliated runners of the nine GLCL clubs plus the affiliated runners of Torfaen Runners have also been invited to take part.

Participation will be similar to other virtual GLCL races; runners complete the run and submit their result with supporting evidence using an online form during the event time window. Each virtual race will have a seven day window for the runner to complete their run, and they are only permitted to submit one result. There won't be any prizes, just online results, we will also show results for male and female teams. Teams will be based on four runners to count.

The GLCL Spring Marathon Preparation Virtual Race dates are as follows :

Mon. 18th ~ Sun 24th January : 8 mile virtual race.

Sat. 20th ~ Sun 28th February : Virtual half marathon

Sat. 6th ~ Sun 14th March : 20 mile virtual race. All these virtual races will be covered by a UKA/RunBritain virtual race permit. Details of each event will be published a couple of weeks before the event start date.

As many of the spring marathons are already cancelled or postponed we may also have a virtual marathon in April if there is sufficient interest.

To boost interest in a virtual marathon in April it has been suggested we would offer runners the option to pay for entry to the marathon and to receive a memento (maybe a medal and shirt or something). This is still to be decided.

The third virtual race of The GLCL Winter Virtual 5 x 5 Race Series (January Race) will be a closed event and only registered members of the nine running clubs who participate in GLCL races will be eligible to participate in the virtual run event.

The event takes place between Monday 4th January and Sunday 10th January 2021.

If you are not already a member of this private facebook group will need to request to join.

When requesting to join the private facebook group you will be asked three questions; 

Which running club are you currently a registered member of ?

Do you agree to be responsible for your own safety when participating in GLCL virtual events ?

Do you agree to social distancing safety guidelines when participating in GLCL virtual events ?

Summary of details for The GLCL Winter Virtual 5 x 5 Race Series January Race are as follows :

1) Distance = 5 miles (8.05 kms).

2) Elevation at start and finish should be equal (elevation at finish MUST NOT be lower than elevation at start by more than 5 metres)

3) Run and submit result between Monday 4th January and 23:59 Sunday 10th January 2021.

4) Submit result using online form provided.

Runners will be required to provide evidence when submitting result; 

e.g. Starva or Garmin file link or image file of recording device.

5) Only 1st claim members of GLCL clubs are eligible to submit a result.

6) Categories and scoring etc. will be as for the summer GLCL virtual races : 

Male 17~39, 40~44, 45~49, 50~54, 55~59, 60~64, 65~69, 70+

Female 17~34, 35~39, 40~44, 45~49, 50~54, 55~59, 60~64, 65+

(age category is set according to runners' age on 1st November 2020)

Male team = 10 runners

Female team = 6 runners

A, B, C teams.

7) No limit to number of runners from each club.
